It was only a matter of time before President Trump chimed in on the lack of action by the Broward County Sheriff’s office and today it happened.
While meeting with governors across the country, Trump said it was “disgusting” that the officers who where there failed to enter the building.
He further stated, “The way they performed was really a disgrace.”
Trump also stated something that is not sitting very well with people on both sides of the aisle.
He stated, “You don’t know until you test it. But I really believe I’d run in there even if I didn’t have a weapon. I think most of the people in this room would have done that too because I know most of you.”
Regardless of how anyone thinks they would have reacted, this comment was completely inappropriate on so many different levels.
First, by directly calling out the Sheriff’s office, Trump risks alienating law enforcement, a major reason he was elected. He has no idea what their protocols were for this situation, so he is speaking out of turn.
While we all want to hold this man accountable, until more facts are known, we have no idea if he was following policy or merely too scared to go in. For the president to throw more fuel on to this fire at this time serves no purpose.
He could have addressed this issue and still made it positive, simply stating something like “the officers did not perform as we would have hoped, but this is something we are looking into.” I think law enforcement officers would have readily accepted something delivered in that tone.
His second comment, about just running into the fray was just idiotic. Nobody knows how they would react until they are in this position. Some of the most well-trained men in the world break under that kind of pressure.
Trump has never served in the military or in law enforcement, meaning he has never been forced to deal with a shot fired in anger. The only time he came close to that type of situation was when the stage was rushed during his campaign.
During his private life, he has always been surrounded by security, so any type of threat has always been handled from afar.
There are more than enough publications, this one included, that want answers about what went down in Florida so this situation can be address and prevented from ever happening again.
Furthermore, he has once again given liberals something to completely shred him about, and you know they are all going to do it. We are going to see pictures of Secret Service Agents shuffling him offstage from the primary attack as well as having his lack of military service brought back up.
And, while I support Trump, I think what he did this morning was way out line.
And yes, I know readers are going to be upset about my comments, but I refuse to put blinders on and accept anything and everything that happens simply because he is my choice.
Much of what Trump has done has been very good for conservatives and some of the issues directly related to these shootings look as though we may finally be making some progress to root out the actual problem behind these attacks, but his words take all of that progress away.
